On 08/25/06 the value of APPL was somewhere between 67.31 and 69.05, which is about $20 off its high value price. While APPL has been somewhat unpredictable this year, it is predicted that the stock should continue to gain ground over the next year to reach a value of about 81.90.

Historical Performance of APPL – The Last Five Years

APPL has really performed well since 2003 where it last experienced a very low depression. Between 2003 and 2004 the stock rose from a value of about $7 per share to a value of about $10 per share. Then between 2004 and 2005 the value continued to grow to a value of about $38 per share. The growth trend continued and at the beginning of 2006 the value had climbed to just under $80 per share.

Xala: women representative of the generational transitions of Senegal

Xala  is a perfect illustration of the underdeveloped middle class and its staggering flaws. The film is an allegorical tale of corruption told with simplicity and is inundated with satire exposing the emerging neo-colonial bourgeoisie. The story is of an African businessman recently elected to the Chamber of Commerce in1960 during the initial onslaught of independence in Senegal.  El Hadji Abdou Kader Bèye has been inflicted with the xala on his wedding night with his third wife, Ngone. His impotence parallels the same cultural affliction emerging within Africa’s post-colonial and post-independence society of nouveaux riches, its peasants, beggars, and the unemployed. The pseudo-bourgeoisie is crippled by selfish motives to trade with Europeans and exploit local Africans. According to Frantz Fanon’s theory of post-coloniality:

Closing the road to the national bourgeoisie is, certainly, the means whereby the vicissitudes of newfound independence may be avoided… But it is also the only means toward progress. 

Instead of making productive investments in his community El Hadji exploits the local people while trying to imitate the foreign consumer culture. He is confronted with the problem of regaining his sexual potency to consummate his new marriage. This issue consumes the story as El Hadji neglects his business affairs and responsibilities as a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He hopelessly searches for a cure to the curse that has ruined his reputation and farcical idea of elitist success in Africa.  The result is his bankruptcy and the ultimate loss off all of his possessions including his wives.
The women of Xala are vital to the story. It is through the female characters that El Hadji’s power is given to him and taken away. They demonstrate the cultural alienation of the bourgeoisie and present alternative models of tradition and modernity. The women “function on both a ‘sociorealistic’ and symbolic level and can be viewed as integral characters whose structural and ideological facets not only reflect but are [as equally important as the male protagonist].”  Rama, Oumi, Awa , and N’Gone all become an inherent part of El Hadji’s ascent and decline economically, sexually, socially, and politically.  Polygamy no longer functions as a traditional structure that brings labor and communal kinship to the community. El Hadji’s second wife, Oumi N’doye helps to install the image of a ‘modern’ Westernized couple. N’Gone symbolizes economic affluence and satisfies El Hadji’s conceit. The first wife, Adja Awa Astou,  is representative of tradition, dignity, and devotion to Muslim principles. Whereas, Rama, their daughter, is a model of the future generation of Africa that will emancipate women from stifling patriarchal traditions.

Awa, El Hadji’s first and oldest wife, retains the essential elements and character of African tradition even though her surrounding environment is rapidly transforming at the expense of modernity. She is docile, yet firm and is seemingly accepting of her role as a faithful and supportive wife in a polygamous situation. When Rama, her daughter, tries to convince her to divorce El Hadji Awa responds in a calm manner saying, “We must be patient in the face of adversity.  You think I’d find a husband. I’ll be a third or fourth wife.” Awa compromises displaying an aggressive character  towards El Hadji’s actions for emotional security and financial support in a patriarchal Islamic society. She stands by her husband in his professional and financial ruin. Awa exhibits passive resistance when relating to Oumi, the second wife. When asked to come inside of Oumi’s house, she refuses  in the name of the marital laws that place submissive restraints on her actions.  She explicitly reminds El Hadji saying, “Do you forget I’m your first? Go and say hello for me.” In a later scene Awa demonstrates solidarity with her co-wife. When Oumi is complaining about the third wife, N’Gone, Awa bestows words of wisdom about the situation. She tells Oumi with cynical humor: “Patience does not kill. If so, I would be dead.”  Once Oumi leaves the wedding Awa openly invites her to her home reminding her that she is the elder in the relationship.

Awa is a representation of Africa in its most unadulterated essence. Though she is rigidly traditional, she is a model for all Senegalese women. She personifies loyalty, patience, dignity, and poise. The African woman is the strength of the family; she is an advisor during times of struggle, in charge of educating the future generations, and a pillar of compliment and support to her husband.  Awa predominately speaks to El Hadji in Wolof , thus retaining the essence of cultural pride. She is also the refuge El Hadji seeks in his state of impotence after he is deserted by his community and three wives.
Oumi, the second wife, is a strikingly different type of woman compared to Awa.

This contrast is explored in the wedding scene where Awa is wearing a traditional African dress and Oumi is shown in a modish wig and a revealing black European style dress. She is a materialistic character and is overtly aggressive when she relates to El Hadji. She believes that due to her youth and sophistication she has the right to say and do whatever she feels.  When El Hadji visits Oumi to take her to the wedding she speaks in French and refers to Awa as an “old dried up fish” as she demands money from El Hadji: “Since you’re spending, I will too! This is not enough, hand it over.” In a later scene she unremittingly reminds El Hadji of his sexual duties in the marriage: “It is my turn. I want you at the house tonight. You know I am always ready.” Oumi arrogantly implies that she will uphold her duties as a wife as long as El Hadji continues to perform his financial and sexual duties when asked. She remains faithful to El Hadji until she realizes his downfall is inevitable.

At this point she decides to depart with the children and all of her belongings to another place far away from such a despicable man. Oumi is the archetypal seductive and disparaging mistress. Her character does not support El Hadji in any productive ways and she is the stereotypical representation of a woman who is foolishly attracted to the hallucinations of Western consumer society and negative post-colonial thought patterns.  Sembene uses Oumi as an example of the caricature that emerges from cupidity, shallowness, denial of culture, and the disillusioned eagerness to follow Western and foreign mores. Oumi is not a successful symbol of the strong progressive African woman. Her character is paralleled with that of El Hadji because her existence is counterproductive to post-colonial African cultural and economic success. 

N’Gone, El Hadji’s third wife illustrates his materialistically motivated greed. “A long panoramic shot of the endless parade of gifts displayed by El-Hadji as her dowry stresses the corrupted patterns of such a tradition. N’Gone is merely traded and exhibited to El Hadji’s middle-aged friends and colleagues.”  He uses N’Gone as his bragging trophy to the Chamber of Commerce by emphasizing her “virginal value.” He tells the counsel men: “My first wife was a virgin and so was my second.”  Accordingly, the brides’ mother teaches her about her duties of a subservient wife. She stresses: “Man is the master, you must always be available. Don’t raise your voice. Be submissive.”  N’Gone does not have an active role in the film; she is merely El Hadji’s “femme objet.”  The poster of N’Gone with her back exposed, located in the bedroom directly “presents the graphic correlation between the businessman’s sexual and economic impotence.”  After several failed attempts to “deflower” his new wife, El Hadji seeks the help of the marabout (herbal healer) only to discover that he has the xala.  His sexual impotence with his new wife portends his symbolic dis-function as a member of the corrupt neo-colonial bourgeoisie. El Hadji’s superficial economic pursuits and greed for elite status backfires into something much greater than sexual disfunction. His lack of cultural, spiritual, economic, and political wisdom causes his entire existence to become impotent and useless in African society.

Rama is a revolutionary and positive source of resistance to her father’s perpetuation of the corrupt bourgeoisie and the French Colonial presence in Senegal. Rama wears a short Afro hairstyle and alternates between modern clothing and her traditional Senegalese boubou. She rides a moped around her town, rejecting unnecessary luxuries of Western society such as her father’s Mercedes. She only uses aspects of Western culture that can directly serve her educational and technological needs.  She consistently speaks in Wolof when her father speaks in French and denies his promotion of foreign products such as French mineral water. She confronts her father in a responsible and mature manner when expressing her vehement enmity towards the traditions of polygamy and stifling post-colonial thought. During a conversation with her mother and father, she expresses that “men are all dirty dogs and every polygamous man is a liar.” As a result, Rama is slapped by El Hadji, but her spirit remains unbroken. “Xala’s evocation of this allows Sembene to highlight the suffering that marriages cause to women and to denounce men’s egotistical motivations for taking several wives.”  El Hadji’s violent response to Rama’s statement is a confirmation of his unrealistic ways of perpetuating and understanding the patriarchal order influenced by the male/religious-instigated system of polygamy.

Rama is the only woman in Xala who is liberated from having to participate in a sexual relationship in exchange for economic support. She is well educated and she is a positive icon for hope in Senegal created by a balance of traditional and modern values. Rama is the single character who has succeeded in assimilating her African principles and European culture into a progressive way of life. Her advocacy of her mother and father’s divorce is symbolic of her mother’s separation from a draining relationship as well as Senegal’s annulment from paternalistic neo-colonial rule. She refuses financial help from her father and expresses that she is more concerned about her mother whom her father has neglected.  Rama demonstrates a synthesis of her mother’s wisdom and dignity and she embodies a universal view of the future, reborn Africa. Her character is indicative of a society that will create a synthesized language and culture indigenous to and reflective of the richness of African ethos while simultaneously emancipating women from patriarchal traditions.  Rama’s function in the film is penetrating and reveals significant issues of the new Africa dealing with progressive post-colonial and post-independence development.

Sembene’s female protagonists are archetypical and play imperative roles in his sociopolitical dialectics. The women in this film do not represent all types of Senegalese women, however they are symbols for the evolution of Africa. Awa represents the traditional culture and history of a transforming continent. Oumi is symbolic of a transitional Africa that places too much value on Western goods and ideology and thus she must “pack up” metaphorically to make room for the new Africa epitomized by Rama. She is the essence of a balanced conglomeration of modern and traditional values, synthesized to bring about the economic, educational, political, cultural, and social emancipation of the oppressed African. Senegal cannot develop with out the emancipation of its women. Sembene implies that Africa’s true growth will come from adopting the fecundity and nurturing qualities of the African woman.  Xala differs from Black Girl because the women of the contemporary generations use their agency to reject and combat the forces of post-coloniality that cause them to feel repressed and captivated.  Diouana chose to passively eliminate her troubles whereas the women in this film are predominately active in catalyzing change.  Xala is an evolution from Sembene’s dialectical messages in Black Girl. The female is the link between generations and she is the “genitrix” of a new Africa. “El Hadji is impotent because he has misused the fecundity of Africa/woman to assert his social and male ascendancy.”  His greed and neo-colonial ignorance overshadows his agency to change his situation and righteously serve his community as one of the first African members of the Chamber of Commerce.

The last scene of Xala is important because both the traditional and the modern, politically committed African women observe El Hadji’s rebirth as the beggars spit on his corruption, greed, and westernized illusion of success.  He is crowned by one of the beggars with the white flower crown worn by his third wife at the wedding. The crown symbolizes the preserved virginity of the woman he was unable to deflower.  It is also representative of the fertile, pure, virginal quality of Africa that will be restored through the elimination of the stagnating middle class bourgeoisie.  The women are the only dignified characters still standing in support of El Hadji in the end of the story, indicating that the fate of the community now lies in the fate of its grandmothers, mothers, and daughters.

It's imperative that health clubs and fitness trainers get new customers on a steady basis. Certain times of the year are better than others for getting new customers. The best time is to seek out business when the customer is most likely to want it. That's why you have to ramp up the effort during the winter months because come summer… you'll be competing with Mother Nature.

A sales blitz is a slam dunk way to get the ball rolling. What's a sales blitz? It's where you and the health club staff make personal sales calls on hundreds of businesses in your immediate market area. You'll be talking to secretaries, bosses, receptionists, managers because just about everybody can join a health club and get fit. It's a great way to generate new business or at the very least, awareness of your health club and personal trainers.

What do you talk about? You can promote a new fitness training program, new equipment or any other product, service or special offer. Make sure the offer has a “call to action” and a time limit so they are motivated to “act now.” If you give out a 3 day pass tell them they must use it in the next two weeks.

Start on a Monday morning with a meeting and training session at 8am. Instruct everyone to wear the uniform or other appropriate attire. Then pair up in teams and tell them to go out into the business community. Each team should have a sales territory drawn out on a map so there's no duplication of effort. Be sure to pay them a decent wage, buy them lunch, give them money for mileage, ask them to take brief notes, pick up a business card, etc.

At the end of the day do a de-briefing and get all of their information about their best sales calls, good prospects etc. Offer prizes (like cash or gift certificates) to the “Blitzer” with the 'best lead' of the day or the best potential piece of corporate business etc. There may even be someone who gets the sales call and comes over to the health club for a tour and then signs up on the spot. Make sure the person making that sales call gets recognition and a little 'green.'

Sales blitzes constantly deliver new business. Why? Do the math. Let's say you have 8 health club staff, fitness trainers and managers who each make 35 sales calls a day. Do this for five days straight, Monday thru Friday, and you'll have made 1400 face to face sales calls! If just 2% decide to do business with you that's 28 new customers! If 5% join then you've just picked up 70 new customers. Sounds like a healthy return on investment to me!

It's very important to give the staff proper training, territories and a good pitch. Arm them with business cards, flyers, three day passes and goodies such as an apple, a sample of a pre-workout supplement like the Real Deal as well as other useful swag. Besides the morale boost in your staff you'll introduce or re-introduce your health club into your market area and you'll most likely pick up some new customers.

The bottom line: A sales blitz pays for itself. Do it now.

A good area to attempt to economize at your wedding is table centerpiece arrangements. Here is a simple how to do it yourself wedding table centerpieces. Costco.com does sell rose centerpieces, but they are much more expensive than you might think – they are $399 for six arrangements and they do not look much different than that which you can easily do yourself.

Price around your local floral venues for roses. One of the cheapest options is the roses available at Costco, that are typically $18 for 2 dozen roses. This deal rarely can be beat, but you can try to see if any local competitors will price match. The colors vary, but you can always count on red roses being available. If you prefer another color, you may have to special order in advance. This may cost $139 plus shipping for 125 roses at costco.com in dark, light or bi-color pink roses, orange roses, bi-color orange, yellow, peach, peach and yellow, off-white or rainbow roses. This will give you ten dozen and a few spares. You can probably do one dozen per table centerpiece, but you can always use 18 to 24 roses per arrangement is you have enough roses.

Some Costco's will take reservations in advance for a set number of roses for no extra fee; others just are a first served first come basis. Inquire as to what your Costco does. A day or two before the wedding, purchase the roses from your local Costco. You can always remove a few outside dead or damaged petals, but for the best quality roses, try squeezing the rose bud and make sure it is firm and not mushy inside. Also check the stem just below the bud and make sure it is strong enough to hold up the head to make sure your roses look fresh when they open in a few days. You might want to get an extra bunch in case you make a mistake or a vase breaks or some roses wilt so that you can replace roses that do not bloom. If a rose does wilt or does not open, pull off all the petals and use these for the flower girls basket or strewn them around the table centerpieces you make or use them to decorate around the cake table, place card setting table, or other focal point. There are about 40 – 50 petals per rose depending on your decorating needs, a full $18 two dozen rose batch can get you up to 1,200 petals to decorate your wedding reception area with.

Put them in warmer water if you want to speed up how fast they open the day of the wedding, but keep them in cool water if you do not want them to open anymore. Otherwise, keep the flowers at about 35 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid extreme temperatures when you transport the flowers, air conditioning might be helpful; on the way over of the car is any warmer than 75 degrees. The colder the storage space, the better to conserve the flowers. Do not freeze the flowers; the heads will wilt when they thaw.

Before the wedding, look for vases on eBay, tag sales and estate sales, flea markets, or craft stores. A simple clear ginger vase should run you less than $10 at stores like Target or Michael's Craft. People often sell their vases that they got when someone sent them flowers, so you may be able to get matching ones on eBay or tag sales. Assess if the vase is the right width and height for your roses, the vase should be two thirds as high as the flowers in the vase.

If you have any flowers in your garden, you can add them to the arrangements or leave them as just classic roses that look very presentable for your wedding. If you wish to add some color or texture to a clear vase, consider the colored clear glass marbles (you can coordinate to your wedding colors) or gather small smooth pebbles or even sea glass or sea shells.

Have a large box and bubble wrap to transport the roses in their vases, leave plenty of room per box to protect the vases and arrangements. This will likely take having the boxes seat belted in on the back seat and the floor as well as the front seat. Depending on the size of your reception, you might need multiple trips or multiple people.

Winter time can very valuable to the garden planner. Whether you are planning a flower, herbal. or veggie garden, time and consideration can add to the quality of your garden. This article will take a look at all three and give you some fresh ideas to think about.

Winter time is important because it gives the gardener a chance to talk to others, read books and magazines, and attend outdoor shows in their area. Many of the outdoor shows have guest lecturers. It is great for the garden area, too. It gives the earth a chance to breath in some fresh air and dissolve nutrients that are important during the growing season.

One of the most important things to consider in any garden is that of low maintenance. The less work during the growing season on maintenance, the more time you have to work with your plants.

First let's take a look at flower gardens. A very important step is to plant a good ground cover. A ground cover acts like mulch. He keeps down the weeds that can detract from your garden. A good ground cover to use would be Ajunga burgundy Glow or Beacon Silver. The Ajunga gives a white, pink and green foliage. The Beacon, which can last until the winter, is a marbled green and white foliage that will eventually turn bronze.

Natives; Natives are great for low maintenance. They require less water and are acclimated to the environment. Some of my favorites is Purple Poppy Mallow, Eastern Redbud, and Beauty berry. The Purple Poppy Mallow is drought tolerant.

Plants of Merritt; These are regionally prove annuals and perennials, shrubs, vines, and trees. Favorites of mine are the Toad Lilly, Lime Elephant Ears, and the Persian shield. for trees and shrubs, I like the Red Twig Dogwood, River Birch, and the Contorta (Harry Laudners walking stick).

Working with these can make it easy on yourself in the hot days ahead.

Now lets look at our Herbs and Veggies. Map it out. I usually take a large sheet of white cardboard with a ruler and start mapping (planning) out where things go. If at all possible, I keep my herbs away from the veggies. However, some individuals don't have that luxury. It is always best to use markers for the herbs that you plant. Many times they are easy to get confused over. Keep it simple. If you are a beginner, plant only 6 to 8 herbs. They will be easier to watch over. Also, you should only grow the herbs that you will use during the cooking season. Good ones to grow would be Bay, Oregano, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Mint, and Parsley.

In your Veggie garden don't let the vine plants stay together. Separate them. For example, put cucumbers in one corner of the garden opposite of your tomato's. Green beans will grow up and out. They take a lot of room also. You may want to locate them in the middle of the garden, yet away from the vine plants. Lettuce, Carrots, and Peppers take up the least amount of space. You can put them in between the vine plants. The same can be said about Sweet Corn, also.

Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays because it's about showing the people you love that you really do love them. So often we go through our everyday lives and we take for granted those who are closest to us. This is the day to make up for the whole year and have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Whether you live in Daytona Beach or you are just visiting, this is a romantic place to spend Valentine's Day, if you can. To begin with the weather will be a warm to moderate, 75* – 80* in February, so that is a big plus factor and there's miles and miles of beautiful beaches. If you are up early enough, you can see one of those awesome sunrises that the postcards all show!

If you are going to make a romantic day of it, start with breakfast at the Sunshine Diner on A1A, right on the beachside. They have a stack of pancakes, covered with fresh strawberries and whipped cream that will melt in your mouth! Of course, they have all the other usual breakfast trimmings available too. That's my first choice, but then there are eight Denny's in the area for the Grand Slam and on the north end of the beach, in Ormond Beach, there is a franchise IHOP that makes waffles fresh to order, with your choice of fresh fruit or chocolate chips and mounds of whipped cream on top. What a wonderful way to start the day. Then also they make all their breakfast specials to your order……so everything is tasty and delicious. You will definitely want to take a walk on the beach now which is right across A1A.

But what would Valentine's Day be without flowers and candy? If you want to surprise your sweetheart there are many florists in the area. Flowers Central is on Charles St. in Daytona Beach and there you can choose your own arrangement and then they will bundle it all up for you while you wait. The Village Florist on Nova Rd., is right in the middle of town, and they have been there for over 20 years. Their flowers are beautiful and they usually have a large variety of tropicals to choose from. Flamingo Florists is also a great florist who has been in the area for years. They are located on Riverside Dr., right in Holly Hill on the river. This is the older part of the Daytona area and the trees and the road right next to the river makes it nice for a drive. While you're in Flamingo's getting a beautiful bouquet, you can also check out their unique gifts and assorted items. Kill two birds in one stop!

But if you want to try something totally different this year, head on down to South Daytona to the Fruit Flowers shop. You got it right; it is tropical edible fruit on sticks made into a fruit bouquet! They are so full of color, and so absolutely delicious that all you need is some melted chocolate to dip them in and you will be in 7th heaven! It is definitely unique and she won't be disappointed!

Now if you really want to top this day off for your sweetheart, you will have to go to a uniquely delicious candy cafe that is down in Old Daytona on Beach St. It is called Angell & Phelps's Café and they have been in business for over 80 years. What makes this candy truly special is that they make it all right there, behind the café. They make handmade chocolates, both light and dark, some with delicious fillings and some not, and it then brought out to the café. They of course sell the candy for you to purchase and take home, but you can also sit in old fashioned candy shop chairs and enjoy right there, after lunch, with a cup of coffee or tea. It is almost sinful, and it is by far the best chocolate for miles around, but they're not open for dinner, so plan on going for lunch and then taking some with you.

What could top this day off and make it anymore romantic? How about a nice walk on the World's Most Famous Beach just as the sun is setting. It will get chilly when the sun's down, so make sure to get in someplace where it's nice and warm. Happy Valentine's Day!

Maintaining a low cholesterol, heart healthy diet and lifestyle is important for the average American of today. It is well known that Heart Disease is killing more Americans in today's world than ever before. A mixture of sedentary lifestyle and eating habits can be blamed for some of our countries health issues. After my serious heart attack at the age of 37, I learned many different ways to live a healthy, low cholesterol lifestyle.

These tips are ones that I have used to help maintain a low cholesterol diet and lifestyle putting some of these to use in your life may keep you healthy longer.

1. Eat less red meat and if it is necessary to eat red meat then be sure to remove all fat from the meat before cooking. Supplement Turkey when possible such as ground turkey or turkey bacon. Make sure that the meat portion of the meal is 4 oz that is about the size of a playing card.

2. Try and eat more Omega 3 Fatty acid foods such as Salmon instead of red meats.

3. Cut back on potatoes, rice, noodles, and if possible eat whole grain, wheat noodles. Eat only a small potato about the size of ½ of your fist, ½ cup rice and if possible ½ cup noodles.

4. Eat whole wheat bread and eat less of them at each meal. If sandwiches are on the menu do not put tons of mayonnaise on the bread but eat it with mustard only or ketchup.

5. Get up from the table before you are full. Over weight people are more prone to heart disease and diabetes than those who are thin and active.

6. Exercise at least 30 minutes three times per week. Walk, jog, join a gym do aerobics or marshal arts training.

7. Eat fewer sweets, as these are bad for you all around. They can cause weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, and many other issues if you eat lots of sweets.

8. See your doctor and have a cholesterol test and a Hemoglobin A1C test every 3 to 6 months.

9. Learn about your family's health history, it is important to understand that heart disease can run in families. Know what your ancestors had as far as health issue so that you and your physician can be well informed on what can be done to keep you healthy.

10. Take supplements such as red yeast rice, CO-Q-10, and Fish oil supplements' Red yeast rice is known to be a natural form of natural staten and can help with lowering cholesterol so can CO-Q-10 as this is a soy supplement. Fish oil supplements are Omega III and good for heart health.
